Favorite Aspect of Council: I love the positive energy of this group. There is a strong drive for results, but at the same time an environment that is warm and affirming.
Hero: : I have many heroes including my Mom and Grandmother. One hero I’ll mention is a beautiful lady named Loudell Gandy. A long-time family friend who is today in her young 90s, she began her career as an accountant in the Dallas area, where there were few, if any, women in the field. (My degree is in accounting). She and her husband Grady became entrepreneurs later in life, successfully managing a TV repair business. I learned a lot from Loudell in her spirit of determination and not letting other’s define who she is. What I really admired, though, is her loving nature. My father died when I was young and my mother raised myself and two brothers. Loudell and Grady were there for us, always. She has drive, but she also has a tenderness and care for others and really touched my life.
Proudest Moment: The birth of my children, Elisse (11) and Brazos (6). I am also proud of behind-the-scene moments where we make a real connection for small, women and minority owned businesses.
Best Advice You've Been Given or Received: I am very inspired by the Bible and often have a favorite verse on the wall or somewhere close. The best advice has been around remembering the things that are important in life and enjoying life every day to the fullest. I have a good friend who has had brain cancer since we were in our teens (in remission for many years but a recent recurrence). He maintains such a great attitude toward life, in making others laugh and in those small moments of connection.
Passion Beyond Business: Oh lots! Family, dancing, music, books and reading, and great friends! I am addicted to the new social networking world via Facebook. And, secretly….I’m a Trekkie! Live long and prosper!
I am very excited on co-chairing the regional initiative for the WBC Southwest and so thankful for Maggie Newton (formerly Dietrich), what a great person to have with the organization to lead in these efforts! I am also looking forward to a co-chair position in 2011 for Business Works and continued work with everyone at the council to promote, encourage and GET RESULTS for women-owned businesses.
